After months of development, a new professional development programme aimed at addressing bias in education officially launched this week in Tāmaki Makaurau, Auckland. The initiative introduces an immersive virtual reality scenario paired with bespoke anti-bias training to support educators and leaders across the sector.

The first session, hosted in person, was led by Professor Christine Rubie-Davies and Dr Hana O’Regan. Participants began by experiencing a virtual reality scenario designed to provide insight into the daily experiences of a Māori school student experiencing bias. Following the viewing, Dr O’Regan explored the systemic bias embedded within New Zealand’s education system, sparking reflective dialogue among participants.

Professor Rubie-Davies then facilitated an interactive group activity designed to serve as a cornerstone for ongoing discussions throughout Term 2, when subsequent sessions will continue. The event marked an exciting step forward for the project team, who were thrilled by initial feedback offered after the session.

The research team praised the high level of engagement, noting that the participants’ openness and enthusiasm set a promising tone for future sessions. The programme aims to empower educators to create more equitable, inclusive learning environments throughout Aotearoa and will be offered again in 2026.
